Acne Scar Treatment: Punch Grafts
My entire life I was blessed with relatively good skin. I consider myself fortunate. However, I am also OCD when it comes to my skin. I wash it incessantly, definitely twice a day. And, I cannot remember the last time I went without skipping a day in my skincare routine, because I want my skin to look good.
Unfortunately, one day I got in a serious automobile accident. After that, my skin was never the same. Call it coincidence or bad luck – whatever you prefer, it was not a good time.
It was the worst actually, because there is nothing worse than not feeling confident in your own skin. My face was full of huge bumps.
One day I succumbed to the dermatologist’s office. She gave me medication for my problem and explained to me a little bit more about the world of acne that before I was unfamiliar with. The one thing I remember her saying was how vital it would be to try to prevent scarring.
However, depending on the severity of acne that you may have experienced at one time or another, you might have been left with unwanted scars.
The worst type of scarring that occurs from acne is the depressed acne scar. These scars often make the skin look rough and uneven. Many people struggle with confidence issues because of the scars on their face. It might be nice to have the acne gone, however, it is not much better if you are left with noticeable scarring.
Fortunately, there is a procedure available today that can help fix the scarring that results from severe acne. It is called a punch graft.
When a punch graft is performed, a small tool is used to cut out the scar that is on the skin. Then, a skin graft (a piece of skin usually taken from behind the ear) is placed in the area of the cut. Usually, the graft is held in place by sutures, steri-strips, or skin glue.
Although the procedure may not sound very pretty, it definitely helps smooth out the surface of someone’s skin that has depressed acne scars.
After the procedure, there may be some minor scarring and a little variety in skin color.
However, these are minor in comparison to what the skin looked like prior to the surgery.
Also, any color issues can usually be corrected with microdermabrasion or chemical peels. You just have to wait for the skin to heal from the punch graft first.
Talk to your doctor if you are considering a punch graft. No one wants to suffer with acne or the scars that result from it. Take advantage of the procedure available to help your skin look better than ever!
